P&O Ferries has invested in modernising the Freight Drivers Lounge on board two of its Irish Sea ferries, European Highlander and European Causeway, which operate between Larne, Northern Ireland and Cairnryan, Scotland.

The refurbished lounges now feature a contemporary interior and eight lie flat beds, giving drivers the option to sleep during the crossing, reducing the risk of fatigue whilst on the road. Each bed also features a private locker allowing belongings to be safely stored.

In addition, 37 “business class” extra legroom reclining seats have been installed, giving drivers the chance to relax whilst watching TV, or having a much-needed power nap. Additional seating and tables also now feature in the forward bars of both ships, aiming to ease congestion and improve passenger comfort, particularly at peak times.

New carpets and louvres complete the refurb, giving the lounges a fresh look and a restful atmosphere.

Kim Swan, P&O Ferries Freight Manager, Larne-Cairnryan, said, “We know a key priority for our freight drivers is to relax and recharge in comfort on their journey, without any disturbance – we listened to their feedback and are very pleased to be able to offer these new facilities. The facilities complement our service, which is the fastest and most frequent across the Irish Sea and reaction to the new lounge has been excellent. We very much appreciate the loyalty of our customers and the assistance they have given us to make this project work. We look forward to continuing to improve our service and exceed expectations in the future.”

Feedback from freight customers was collected through a combination of on-board touchscreen kiosks and questionnaires. In response to this, the ferry operator worked to deliver the improved facilities whilst the ships were in dry-dock.

P&O Ferries operates up to seven departures per day from both Larne and Cairnryan with a journey time of only two hours. Check-in, load and discharge operations are fast and efficient. In addition to the new facilities, drivers can also access a restaurant and showers on-board. Both ports also feature new driver facilities that include toilets, showers, rest and TV areas, as well as access to refreshments.
