Ferry company Stena Line has confirmed that STENA EDDA will return to service tonight. The ship has been given clearance by the relevant authorities following deep cleaning after a small number of crew tested positive for COVID-19. The ship will be operated by replacement crew members which have all already tested negative for COVID-19.

The Ro-Ro freight vessel STENA FORETELLER sailed from Belfast at around 11:30 this morning carrying freight for Birkenhead in the absence of STENA EDDA. The ship had been laid up at Loch Ryan Port (Cairnryan) while she awaited her introduction to the Rosslare – Cherbourg service early in January.

Stena Line can confirm that our 7 crew members that tested positive for COVID-19, and 8 close contacts that were identified, were brought ashore from Stena Edda earlier today and are being cared for.

In line with our extensive safety protocols, and in close conjunction with the Port Health Authorities, the vessel has been deep-cleaned and fully sanitised.

Replacement crew have been tested and all found to be negative before boarding the vessel.

The company is pleased to confirm that the local authorities and maritime agencies have indicated that the vessel now can be returned to service.

Stena Edda will resume operations for tonight’s 22:30 departure from Birkenhead to Belfast.

Stena Line would like to thank the Liverpool Port Health, Public Health England, and in particular Wirral Council, for their assistance over the past few days.

The well-being of our employees and customers is now our priority. Stena Line would like to thank everyone for their patience and understanding while we dealt with this difficult situation.
