The third of Grimaldi Group’s ‘GG5G’ (Grimaldi Green 5th Generation) class Ro-Ro ferries was delivered by Jinling shipyard in Nanjing earlier today the Italian company has confirmed. ECO LIVORNO os one of twelve hybrid Ro-Ro vessels designed by Knud E. Hansen ordered from the shipyard.

Grimaldi claims that the GG5G-class are the most eco-friendly and largest short sea Ro-Ro vessels in the world. ECO LIVORNO has a capacity of 7,800 linear metres on her seven decks, allowing her to carry the equivalent of around 500 trailers and 180 cars per trip.

Like her previously delivered sister-ships ECO VALENCIA and ECO BARCELONA, ECO LIVORNO measures 238 metres in length with a beam of 34 metres. The 67,311 gross ton ship has an impressive service speed of 20.8 knots, yet consumes the same amount of fuel as previous generation vessels with half the cargo capacity when travelling at the same speed.

When in port, ECO LIVORNO and her sisters can run on electricity stored in onboard lithium batteries. Unlike other vessels which use electricity in port, these batteries are recharged while the ship is at sea using onboard generators and some 350m2 of solar panels. Grimaldi chose this solution, which utilises batteries with a capacity of 5 MWh, due to the unavailability of onshore charging infrastructure in the Mediterranean.

In addition, the vessel is equipped with state-of-the-art, electronically controlled engines and with an exhaust gas cleaning system for the reduction of sulphur and particulate emissions.

According to Grimaldi Managing Director Emanuele Grimaldi:

“We are in the midst of a green revolution that our Group has strongly promoted and in which it has been investing for years, and we are proceeding swiftly in this direction”

“With the delivery of the Eco Livorno, we enhance our fleet with a new precious unit, which we will deploy in the coming weeks to serve our customers and continue to meet their expectations in terms of quality and eco-sustainability”

ECO LIVORNO is expected to arrive in Italy by the end of February. She will join ECO VALENCIA and ECO BARCLEONA on the Livorno, Savona, Barcelona and Valencia Ro-Ro service.
