Could Irish Ferries new Dublin – Holyhead ferry be built in China Instead of Germany?
There has been a report that Irish Ferries are in talks with Chinese yards to potentially build their next new ferry in place of Germany’s FSG.
Stena Edda is a Stena Line owned passenger and vehicle ferry. She is the second of a new class of “E-Flexer” ferries built for Stena in China. Stena Edda has capacity for 930 passengers plus 3,100 lane metres of freight and 120 passenger cars. At 214.4 m long, Stena Edda will be the longest ferry operating to Northern Ireland when she enters service between Belfast and Birkenhead in late-spring 2020.

The first of Stena Line’s three new Irish Sea vessels was floated out of the building dock at AVIC Weihai in China yesterday. Named STENA ESTRID*, the new ‘E-Flexer’ ferry is expected to enter service on-time on the Dublin to Holyhead route in early 2020.
Tomorrow is an important milestone in the E-Flexer project, with the first vessel due to be floated out at AVIC Weihai tomorrow morning. Stena Line has announced that they will be broadcasting the “launch” live from China via their LinkedIn page
This means that all three of Stena Line’s new E-Flexer ships, planned to enter into service on the Irish Sea during 2020 and 2021, are now under construction at the Avic Weihai Shipyard in China.
